A Walk around Farnhill

This wasn’t where I was originally going to walk, but the traffic was so busy on the Keighley to Skipton by-pass it took ages to get anywhere so I thought it was better to park up at the Bradley canal and do this walk rather than keep on to Gargrave and then not have time to walk anywhere. It was nearly 2pm already.  The day was lovely, crisp clear and ideal for walking.

It’s been a while since I’ve walked on here so I took the book with the directions with me.  The canal towpath was quite muddy and slippy but there were lots of people out with dogs and children making the most of the crisp sunny day.

The walk along the canal was a lot further than I remembered I re-read the directions a couple of times to make sure I hadn’t missed crossing the correct swing bridge.  However when I turned a corner and saw the bridge and field up to Farnhill in front of me I knew I was on the right track.

When I got to the top and found the gate and track up through the trees I remembered that too

.   It was really pleasant walking up through the trees.  Eventually came out by the old quarry.  I took the right hand path that passed close by and came out on top heading towards Jubilee Tower.

It was pretty busy up there today lots of family groups and dog-walkers.  On the way up one guy had passed me with 3 tan and white terriers and he was on the way back already.  Clearly a there and back walker.

The views were pretty good from the Tower today clear skies .and not a lot of haze on the horizon.

As I read the next lot of directions it came flooding back to me – the way back down is steep VERY STEEP. I wasn’t looking forward to this bit.  Its quite tricky on a good day but today the ground underfoot was quite slippy with mud, ice and slimy leaves.  Days like this I always think I should have brought my walking pole.  Too late now.  As I gingerly made my way down the hill-side I hugged the wall to hold on to. I did enjoy the views and the Silver birch trunks in the copse over the wall looked lovely.  On reaching the bottom I turned right towards Bradley village from here it was just a straight forward walk through the village.  It was 4 pm and still light – the days are starting to get a little longer now.  A good 4 mile walk.
